Artist of the Day: DZA

First Dza’s beat tape Five-Finger Discount has been released at Error Broadcast in 31st of May 2010.

DZA must’ve hacked into an old orbiting Sputnik or drifting Soviet satellite to get the sounds he uses to make his atmospheric beats. Since he set up his Myspace page only a few months ago, he’s already been collaborating with Aloe Blacc, Herrmutt Lobby, Shadow Huntaz, Om’mas Keith of Sa-Ra Creative Partners, and fellow 2010 participant Mujuice (As Cut2Kill). Meanwhile, taking his live show to MIDEM earlier this year has brought him plenty of new fans from overseas. Finding that elusive balance between heavy beats and weightless ambience, DZA is ready to snap necks and leave a zilla-sized footprint on Red Square (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Cupp Cave

Francis bakes his beats by the dozen. Both his previous efforts on Carte Postale were filed under the Kingfisherg moniker - which leads me to believe that Francis skived spelling in primary. This is his first as Cupp Cave. His Garbage Pail Beats are a rump-shaking, head-nodding, feet-shuffling slap in the face, one for the crate-diggers and glitch-lovers. Think nice crunchy gravel. Think big, red, 8-bit family sedan. Think wearing sunglasses sitting in the passenger seat with the window open. Think sunshine. Thump, thump, clap; Cupp Cave is guaranteed Hennessy-free (ReverbNation, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Dak or Dakim

A sneak-peek download in honor of the completion of our first digital release. “Standthis”, available July 7th on digital portals (itunes, boomkat, etc.) and limited hand-made cassettes, represents the future of psychedelic hip-hop in an addictive EP of epic proportions. Although Dak’s sound is rooted in basic hip-hop rhythms and structures, his main practice consists of insane post-dilla experiments in freepsychjazz. This exploration and ultimate transcendence of genre captures the spirit and scope of Leaving releases to come (Last.fm, 2010).

“MillionYoung‘s hypnagogic, late night, loping pop loops bloom in the shadows of delirious dream territories; Mike Diaz’s aching, arching, always overhead vocals floating lonely above an effervescent, imagined coastal paradise of found tribal drum snippets, syrupy synth rushing and brilliantly colourful, drawn-out circular guitars that just absolutely refuse to fade or break, shading braincells in never-lived nostalgia; making stomachs shift with strange sickness in a beautiful, unshakeable way" (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Washed Out

Washed Out is Ernest Greene, a young guy from Perry, Georgia, USA who makes bedroom synthpop that sounds blurred and woozily evocative, like someone smeared Vaseline all over an early OMD demo tape, then stayed up all night trying to recreate what they heard.

There’s a sense of longing and distance in Greene’s somber, filtered vocals, but it’s what he does compositionally that makes Washed Out stand out. Backed by gently pulsing, Balearic-tinged disco, Greene’s voice takes on a new dimension. Reminiscent of groups like The Glass and the Chromatics, Washed Out is the music to end your night with, when the city is quiet and the walk home, long (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Count Bass D

Some people DJ, others make beats. Heads everywhere spit lyrics—either off the dome or noted, and many are even recognized as true MC’s who actually manage to rock a crowd here & there. A few folks get by juggling two or more facets; and even a small number happen to be classically or self-taught piano players, drummers and strummers. Count Bass D does it all.

Count has been working to prove this since his decade-old debut, Pre-Life Crisis (Sony). Not only did he compose every note, pen lyrics, contribute the cuts and scratches—but he played most of the instruments (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: A.M. Architect

The core of A.M. Architect’s inviting sound—laid-back, hip-hop-inflected beats paired with Fender Rhodes melodies, acoustic and electric guitar shadings, and an occasional sample—speaks volumes about its appeal. Though it may be a side project for Diego Chavez (aka Aether216) and Daniel Stanush (aka Magic Note, lead guitarist for the Panic Division), there’s nothing half-assed about the dozen fresh cuts that compose The Road to the Sun.

Think fifty-two minutes of warm, organic tunes succulently supplemented with pedal steel, cello, field samples, synthesizers, electric piano, and drums and you’re in the right ballpark. That there’s no “deep meaning” to be gleaned from the set isn’t a weakness either, as A.M. Architect’s lustrous set-pieces are appealing enough on their own terms to render the point moot.

Check out “Albatross,” which breezily glides through a sunlit zone of stutter-funk melodies before slowing to a hazy close. Add a soul-jazz feel and sprinkle a dash of post-rock into the mix and you’re all set for dreamy fare such as “Next of Kin” and “Road to the Sun Part I.”

When softly cooing female vocals ride a rhythmic wave in the track’s second part, you might find yourself reminded of the enticing vocal cuts Scott Herren occasionally works into his Prefuse 73 full-lengths—not bad company for A.M. Architect to keep. And you’ll have a tough time in this year or any year finding an instrumental hip-hop track more ravishing than “Upon,” as strong an argument for The Road to the Sun as could possibly be made.

Each track bleeds almost immediately into the next, making the album feel like a strong club set where, egged on by an appreciative crowd, Chavez and Stanush can’t wait to dig into the next song the moment the previous one’s done. Don’t be surprised if, listening to it, you don’t feel the same (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Apollo Brown

Apollo Brown is different than most producers. He grew up on the Seals and Crofts—not the Isley Brothers—version of “Summer Breeze.” Born into a bi-racial family in Grand Rapids, Michigan, his early influences skewed more toward the music of Journey and the Carpenters than the urban genres his peers often cite as inspiration. This is not to say that once hip-hop came into play, Apollo wasn’t all in. Just as easily as he can praise the virtues of yacht rock, the 29-year-old beatsmith can name personal heroes—Gang Starr, Wu-Tang, Mobb Deep, M.O.P., Nas, and Black Moon—from the early 90s period in which, for him, beats and rhymes became life.

Apollo began making his own music in 1996 using now-archaic Voyetra audio software, then upgraded to Cool Edit 2000 in becoming a self-described bedroom beat-maker for roughly the next eight years. After graduating from Michigan State University with a degree in business administration, he moved to the west side of Detroit and immersed himself in the local hip-hop community, forming the Black Day in July production crew with high school classmate and Wu-Tang affiliate Bronze Nazareth. When the pair branched off into individual work, Apollo relocated to the east side of the Motor City and continued to build before becoming disenchanted with music and stepping away from production for two years.

It was the mid-2000s, and the upstart producer saw no future for his work—work he had dedicated his life to—in an industry where radio was setting a formulaic pattern for mainstream music. But he eventually began to miss the creativity in his craft and began producing once again, releasing the instrumental albums Skilled Trade (2007) and Make Do (2009). Apollo was soon in high demand, collaborating with Detroiters Finale, MaGestiK LeGenD, Danny Brown, Paradime, and Kam Moye aka Supastition. He went on in 2009 to win the Detroit Red Bull Big Tune Championships and competed in the national finals. Apollo then signed as a producer with the Mello Music Group in December of 2009, having left Michigan in late 2007 to take a position as a property inspector in Cleveland, Ohio. A week after signing, he was laid off from his job.

“Beautiful,” was Apollo’s reaction, as he viewed the layoff as a blessing and prepared for what he terms his “one-year plan.” Starting things off will be The Reset, a series of reworked tracks in true remix tradition, with new music and arrangements for verses by Rapper Big Pooh of Little Brother, Black Milk, MED, Grap Luva, labelmates Kenn Starr, Oddisee and Diamond District, along with a host of others. 2010 collaborations include the Brown Study album as half of the group UPS with Boog Brown, a new album from Daily Bread with Rochester, New York MC Hassaan Mackey, and the long-awaited Gas Mask LP as one-third of The Left with DJ SoKo and MC Journalist 103.

Apollo’s credo is simple: “Everything I make, I try to make it my favorite album of all time.” He is building on the foundation laid down by Nas’ Illmatic and Black Moon’s Enta Da Stage in hopes of taking it one step further, and most important, is past the trepidation felt in the past. Radio is good, but Apollo’s music is for the children of the underground. 2010 is the year in which he stakes his claim to make Apollo Brown a household name (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Paul White

A talented library producer with BBC and Channel 4 credits to his name, Paul White crafts his distinctive psychedelic nuggets at his South London rooftop studio, The Skylight. Paul’s earliest transmissions took the form of a series of mesmerizing beat tapes: rapid-fire scrapbooks of rough-edged artifacts passed between small circles of music-lovers.

A couple of sought-after 7”s and a handful of remixes later and Paul’s was the name to drop amongst the cognoscenti, from old-schoolers such as Ashley Beedle and Danny Breaks to new kids on the block like Gaslamp Killer. Amongst his most vocal champions are the BBC’s Mary Anne Hobbs, Benji B and Gilles Peterson - the latter featured Paul in his ‘Beat Generation’ special amongst the pick of the new breed. In print, Dazed & Confused enthused that he “embodies all that is good about a new generation of producers” while FACT magazine have tipped Paul as a key practitioner in the renaissance in instrumental hip-hop.

This last phrase is perhaps a key to distinguishing Paul from much of the pack: while he appeals to lovers of prog rock, of electronica, of a multitude of bass-heavy hybrids, there’s something unmistakeably ‘hip-hop’ in his approach and his sound (Last.fm, 2010).

Suff Daddy started working with MySpace postergirl Kissey Asplund back in 2005, who is also featured on his Beat 45 “Kill Bill”. Artist of the Day: AFTA-1

A F T A 1:

The universe is composed of L I G HT and V I B R A T I O N

Through C O L O R, the infinite variations of light manifest. Through S O U N D, the infinite variations of vibration manifest. Through light, love is seen. Through vibration love is felt. Through love, light and vibration are 1. Love is 1; the God energy from which these two life elements are born. As vessels chosen to carry this center frequency, what we create is not of us. It comes “AFTA 1.” As a direct result of the transmission of pure, untainted L O V E.

I am only a vessel of that love. Blessed with the gift of translation; love to music, sound to color. Born of loving parents, student of love by way of my loved ones, selector, creator. I am just as you are, one with the gift of life, who’s purpose it is to live it and be inspired by it. So that I many inspire those around me. I Manuel Alejandro Moran, am spirit, body and mind. AFTA 1 is Love. Love is Real (Last.fm, 2010).
