Artist of the Day: Eric Lau

Eric Lau is a London-based producer who has been busy making musical waves for others. He may well be a producer you`ve heard, but not heard of, by way of his productions for the likes of Lupe Fiasco, Dudley Perkins, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Guilty Simpson, Wildchild, Tanya Morgan, Hil St Soul, and a family of upcoming artists who feature on New Territories, his debut solo album.

His slick and edgy productions have turned the ears of Gilles Peterson (Lau appeared on his Brownswood Bubblers release of October 2006) and Fat City Records who released Eric Lau presents Dudley & Friends in January 2007. Tastemakers and peers like Benji B (BBC Radio 1Xtra) called Laus soulful street sounds Heavy, Phonte (of Little Brother) added that Lau is One of the illest beatmakers.

New Territories has a double meaning. Its the area in Hong Kong that the Lau family are from and regularly visit. People have a vision of Hong Kong being sky scrappers and high rises everywhere, says Lau. However, the area known as New Territories is full of mountain ranges, sea, villages and farm land. Its very peaceful and pure there, and these are qualities I try to incorporate into my production. Also, the title refers to the album and the global musical connections it made. There are many young artists on the record and our roots are from around the world, explains Lau. Even though we are from different backgrounds we approached the album with the same mindset and all want to help each other get to where we want to be. This record is a new territory for us as a group of artists, and I hope that it is, in turn, a refreshing listen.

UK born Lau has only relatively recently got into music production, but delved-in neck-deep. I dont really have a very musical family or musical upbringing, he says. But apparently my mother used to sing Chinese opera during the revolution in Hong Kong. Moving to London at the age of 19 his time at University there turned him on to the possibility of music as a way of life. Just being in London, with an open mind, thats all it took, he explains. Now 26 years old, Lau is either in the studio, or can be found teaching at RollingSound, a youth-led multimedia education company.

At RollingSound under-privileged inner-city kids get to learn music production, DJ-ing, video gamed design, photography, film and web design. I ve been their head tutor and artistic consultant for the last 3 years and have had a big say in the design of the courses and delivery, says Lau. If I was not doing the music thing I would definitely put all my efforts in to teaching and work in the youth sector as I have seen so many talented young people take their skills in multimedia and more importantly life to the next level (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Blue Daisy

‘Imagine yourself in a box, a normal four-by-four box, and you’re sitting in there, and you’ve got little holes to breathe….and different atmospheres are coming in- you’ve got the cold air coming in, the hot air coming in, and it overwhelms you. You pass out and wake up again in the same box, but that box becomes a new world. So now, where you’re sitting, it’s not a box anymore, the box becomes what you want it to be- it becomes your world. And that’s what I try to do with my music; you’re listening to my music but I don’t want you to just listen to it, I want it to grab you and sit you in the middle of the track. ’ - Blue Daisy (Last.fm, 2010)

Where were you in ’92?” demands Zomby, as he throws you full-tilt through his system-rinsing debut LP, an awesome revival of early 90s hardcore with a modern, tweaked-out twist.

Whatever has been written about Zomby is probably wrong. Not because of who wrote it, but because the English producer Zomby loves to remain anonymous (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Joy Orbison

“Cool” uncles have always gotten kids into all kinds of wonderful mischief, but 22-year-old Peter O’Grady from London , better known as Joy Orbison, was especially blessed—he credits uncle Ray Keith with introducing him to jungle and U.K. garage long before he could ever hit the clubs.

At the age of 13 he took up DJing and eventually moved into production, beginning with Fruity Loops-crafted 8-bar grime loops before shifting into headier territory that combined his love of house, disco, and dubstep with the atmospheric fuzz of bands like My Bloody Valentine, Josef K, and The Beach Boys. His debut single “Hyph Mngo” has become the forward-thinking dubstep/2-step tune of 2009, and was followed by “BRKL CLLN” on O’Grady’s own Doldrums label, which he runs in tandem with partner Impey (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Ramadanman

David ‘Ramadanman’ hails from north London, but now lives near Bournemouth and goes to university in Leeds. He has been DJing from the age of 14, beginning with deep house and hip hop, becoming attracted to hip-hop and jungle as he grew older.

Ramadanman has been interested in music all his life, and began producing by recording keyboard songs onto cassettes. After learning how to make music on computer, Ramadanman started to use his brother’s copy of Fruity Loops at around the age of 15. He has stuck with this program ever since.

He heard about dubstep through making grime instrumentals, after several people commented that his beats sounded like it. Inspired by a Mala set after reaching FWD for the first time in April 2006, Ramadanman became involved in the dubstep scene. He made many tunes that summer after moving house, two of which he had professionally mastered at Transition Studios. These tunes were digitally released as WAVs, and were sold directly to DJs through Dubstepforum.com.

Since then Ramadanman has put out two more digital releases, and has seen his music appear on vinyl. His tune ‘Response’ was the first release on Bare Dubs, and the anthemic ‘Good Feelin’ came out on 2nd Drop Records with a Jamie Woon remix on the flipside. In late 2007 his track ‘Every Next Day’ opened proceedings on the compilation Box Of Dub 2, released by the legendary Soul Jazz Records. He has enjoyed DJ support from Skream, Kode9, Distance, Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob da Bank and many more.

Ramadanman decided to start a record label called Hessle Audio with fellow students Ben UFO and Pangaea at the start of 2007 and the first release by TRG sold out within weeks. He is involved in organizing the Leeds’ first 100% dubstep night ‘Ruffage’, as well as hosting a weekly show on internet radio station Sub FM. 2007 has seen Ramadanman DJ in UK cities such as London, Leeds, Bristol, Nottingham, York, Brighton, Cambridge, Stoke and Durham as well as international bookings in Amsterdam, Berlin and Brussels.

He has performed alongside dubstep artists such as Digital Mystikz, Skream, Benga, Kode9, D1, Rusko, Kromestar, Plastician, Mary Anne Hobbs, Heny G, Scuba and Headhunter (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Bibio

Bibio is Stephen James Wilkinson from Wolverhampton, England. Wilkinson studied ‘Sonic Arts’ between 1999 - 2002 at Middlesex University in North London, it was during this time in London he came up with the name Bibio. The name was taken from a small black and red fishing fly which was favoured by his father on their fishing trips to Wales during Stephen’s childhood, the name therefore has nostalgic meaning which is often a theme in his music.

His recording career as Bibio started with Mush records in 2004. His Mush releases consist of 3 albums and 1 EP. In 2009 he signed to Warp records and so far has released a further album and an EP containing remix contributions from other artists. Bibio’s music combines electronic and acoustic/traditional instruments, his main instrument being guitar. Bibio’s signature ‘grainy’ sound is partly due to the use of analogue tape and vintage recording equipment, which is more exaggerated in his earlier Mush releases.

Wilkinson himself labeled his debut on Mush as “Saturated Folk”. Bibio’s recent output, particularly on Warp, has been more diverse, with an increasing use of his own vocals, drums/beats and electronics. His Mush debut ‘Fi’ was described by Marcus Eoin of Boards of Canada as: “The antidote to the modern laptopia of pristine electronic music…”. In 2009, Bibio contributed a cover version of Boards of Canada’s ‘Kaini Industries’ to the Warp 20th Anniversary ‘Recreated’ album (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Balam Acab

Balam Acab, like Salem and oOoOO, traverse the same shadowy territories that seem at once sensual and unnerving. Balam Acab creates something akin to Burial being slowly drowned in an ocean of drone, a cybernetic limbo haunted by distant machine moans, those trademark ghostly digi-diva vocals positively lost in another world all together (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Nobody

Nobody (Elvin Estela), has been a fixture in the Los Angeles music scene since the early 1990s, first as a producer for many of the premier emcees at the Good Life Cafe/Project Blowed, and then as a remixer, producer, and important member of the global electronic and indie-rock communities. He has worked with, remixed, and toured in support of the Postal Service, Prefuse 73, The Mars Volta, Aceyalone, Mia Doi Todd, and many others.

His releases for Ubiquity and Plug Research have garnered him not only critical praise, but the clout to define and redefine his sound as he sees fit. His productions effortlessly flow from the hip-hop themes of his early career to the psychadelia and rock motifs of his most recent work, and his vast musical vocabulary allows him to deliver with each and every mix (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: How to Dress Well

Tom Krell leads a double life. During the day, he’s a research fellow currently translating a book of post-Kantian philosophy in Cologne, Germany. But after work he’s making narcotized, below-fi R&B as How to Dress Well. In October of last year, Krell started posting batches of his clouded tunes to his blog. They’re marked by his high voice, piercing and fragile like the rest of his music.

At this point, he’s got nearly 30 songs up for download, and the recently P4k-highlighted tracks “Decisions” and “Ready for the World” are great places to start (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Metaform

Metaform (born Justice Aaron) is an American music producer, musician, and songwriter. He is considered a prominent figure in the development of instrumental Hip-Hop and first gained notice with the release of his highly acclaimed debut album Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, which was constructed entirely from samples.

Metaform grew up in Los Angeles in a musical household. His Dad played Leonard Cohen, Simon and Garfunkel, and Ravi Shankar records, while Mom listened to Whitney Houston and Curtis Mayfield. His parents divorced in 1988 and soon after he moved to San Francisco with his mother and three sisters. He spent the year of 1998 as an intern at Spark Studios in Oakland, California, in which time he had experience working with E-40, Tone Capone, and Scarface. He spent the year of 1999 shipping records for TRC distribution at which time he delved deeper into the already buzzing Bay-Area Hip-Hop scene. From 2000-2005, he worked as a free-lance sound engineer and worked with many high-profile acts including: DJ Jazzy Jeff, Afrika Bambaataa, Pharcyde, Hieroglyphics, Living Legends, Goapele, Zion-I, and many others. He graduated from San Francisco State University in 2005 before moving back to Los Angeles and then to Tokyo.

Metaform began playing piano at age 7, guitar at age 13 and at age 16 he started a heavy metal band with two classmates; they mostly played Metallica and Slayer covers. At age 18 Metaform joined the now defunct San Francisco punk rock band, The Breakouts, as rhythm guitar and they played several club shows in San Francisco. After the The Breakouts, Metaform met 4X-ampL (who now resides in Montreal) in an audio engineering class. The two quickly became friends and formed the rock group Team USA (along with Casten on drums) and Metaform played guitar and contributed vocals. Later, Metaform and 4X-ampL formed the electronica duo Razed High. During this time Metaform was known as Hai-Ding, a play on words in that he was “in hiding” and working on what would later become Standing on the Shoulders of Giants (Last.fm, 2010).

The Pixelord is Alexey Devyanin. He’s a Moscow-based veteran of experimental music, best-known for his Gultskra Artikler moniker. When we got to know that his new project is about BEATS, it was instantly clear that is has to be groundbreaking great.

His debut four-track EP “Lucid Freaks” brings forth a mixture of spliffed-out 8bit riddims, stumbling Hip Hop beats and a pinch of Euro Dance glam. However unique, the weirdo plastic Pop of Glasgow’s Hudson Mohawke is echoed in his tunes as well as bass-driven digital Reggae, Jahtari-style (Last.fm, 2010).

One-man project Forest Swords is based in Wirral/Liverpool, UK. Forest Swords’ music reflects the sprawling Wirral landscape of river, coastland and woodland while echoing nearby city Liverpool’s enviable pop history. Foggy grooves rub shoulders with simple, skeletal R’n’B/hip hop influenced beats and snippets of striking, bewitching melody. It has been described as ‘psychedelic dub’ and ‘slow burning drone-step with soul’. In mid 2009 Forest Swords released CDR EP ‘Fjree Feather’ and limited edition cassette ‘Miarches’ (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Swede:art

Swede:art’s origins are based in 90s boom bap themes but developed since electronical music is spreading like these days to directions, which are formally based on 90 bpm productions but can’t be compared with old stuff from classical hiphop material.

His productions can’t be defined through genres nowadays but they’re linked to a “movement”, which is often called just “BEATS” from former heads, focusing on up and coming bedroom producers in electronical future beats after dilla.

Strongly influenced from new generation warps like flying lotus, hudson mohawke, rustie and more skewing soundscapes are also matter as the typical warm and soulful drumset beyond the rustle. At 19, he’s definitely sharing in future stuff, especially considering collaborations with other producers and vocalists from Germany and worldwide (Last.fm, 2010).

Having recently released his first EP Dream Catcher on Rxlngr, and performing on stage with accomplished future soul singer Muhsinah, it seems the blocks are starting to fall into place for Lloye Warner aka 00Genesis. The Maryland-based 19-year-old is on a constant curve, drawing hypnotic fuel from his self-penned cartoon characters and watercolour backdrops. Artist of the Day: Dam-Funk

Known as Los Angeles’ “ambassador of boogie funk,” DâM-FunK represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Culver City section of L.A., DâM (pronounced ‘dame’ as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-80’s styles known as boogie, modern soul and electro-funk.

As a DJ/selector, DâM-FunK attracts the most discerning boogie funk aficionados within driving distance of his storied Monday-night Funkmosphere parties. But it’s not just collectors at the bar toasting to the melodic sounds. Anyone who grooves to the likes of Slave, Aurra, early Prince, Prelude Records and the like, will get a dose of those groups’ unknown contemporaries – more obscure but equally funk-worthy.

The next phase of the ambassador’s mission: continuing the classic West Coast tradition into today’s scene with DâM’s own original “modern-funk” compositions. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, DâM channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie. Stones Throw Records’ like-minded honcho Peanut Butter Wolf brought DâM on to the team to glide into the future with his unique, synth and bass-driven vibe. It’s a promising new chapter for Southern Cali space funk (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Space Dimension Controller

In the year 2257, Planet Earth was invaded by an energy seeking race of aliens known as the Pulsovians, sparking a galactic war that lasted over two years. Sadly, the Pulsovian technology was much more advanced than that of the humans and Earth was lost. The Pulsovians drained the energy from the sun, turning it into a Pulsar. Earth died soon after, leaving the humans no choice but to flee into outer space to find a new home.

For over 75 years the last remnants of mankind lived aboard their escape vessels. It wasn't until the year 2334 that a man named Max Tiraquon discovered a distant planet in Mikrosector-50 of the deep space grid that was suitable for human habitation.

Shortly after the discovery of Mikrosector-50, Max Tiraquon founded the Tiraquon Security Council as the first government of mankind's new home. A man known as Mr. 8040 was made the Deputy Space Dimension Controller of the council.

By day, Mr. 8040 and Max Tiraquon defend the boundaries of the security barrier from astro bandits and rebels who seek to destroy the barrier and free the citizens of Mikrosector-50.

By night, Mr. 8040 lives a secret life… Travelling outside the barrier into deep space where no radar can detect him, Mr. 8040 creates music using ancient earth technologies alone in his Electropod.

When ready he ventures deeper into space to uncharted colonies where music is accepted. He plays in illegal night clubs on distant moons and alien proto-spheres. When asked to describe his music, Mr. 8040 doesn't really have much to say. The only way to describe it is... GALACTIC FUNK (Reprise Music Group, 2010).
