Artist of the Day: Bibio
Bibio is Stephen James Wilkinson from Wolverhampton, England. Wilkinson studied ‘Sonic Arts’ between 1999 - 2002 at Middlesex University in North London, it was during this time in London he came up with the name Bibio. The name was taken from a small black and red fishing fly which was favoured by his father on their fishing trips to Wales during Stephen’s childhood, the name therefore has nostalgic meaning which is often a theme in his music.
His recording career as Bibio started with Mush records in 2004. His Mush releases consist of 3 albums and 1 EP. In 2009 he signed to Warp records and so far has released a further album and an EP containing remix contributions from other artists. Bibio’s music combines electronic and acoustic/traditional instruments, his main instrument being guitar. Bibio’s signature ‘grainy’ sound is partly due to the use of analogue tape and vintage recording equipment, which is more exaggerated in his earlier Mush releases.
Wilkinson himself labeled his debut on Mush as “Saturated Folk”. Bibio’s recent output, particularly on Warp, has been more diverse, with an increasing use of his own vocals, drums/beats and electronics. His Mush debut ‘Fi’ was described by Marcus Eoin of Boards of Canada as: “The antidote to the modern laptopia of pristine electronic music…”. In 2009, Bibio contributed a cover version of Boards of Canada’s ‘Kaini Industries’ to the Warp 20th Anniversary ‘Recreated’ album (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Deru
Deru’s music bridges different worlds. Hip-Hop, Electronic, Avant Garde. Back in High School in Chicago, Deru (Benjamin Wynn) had his friends wearing out underground hip-hop mix tapes. The second tape had Slug of Atmosphere rhyming with a “borrowed” microphone bought just for the session and returned after… Those tapes, by the way, are still being played.
Since then, Deru has found himself studying music in California (where he now resides) and writing music for TV and even dance. One of his recent projects was a collaboration with a classical composer for the Paris Opera Ballet. This piece was a far cry from hip-hop yet this is his music; a synergy of influences.
What this means, in short of course, is that Deru can get both the thinkers and the drinkers on the floor dancing, all in perfect synergy (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Villain Accelerate
Villain Accelerate is an instrumental hip-hop group born out of mutual respect and the desire to create. Comprised of producer Sixtoo and longtime Sebutones collaborator Stigg Of The Dump, Villain Accelerate embodies hip-hop. Sixtoo's releases for Cease And Desist, Vertical Form, and Ninja Tune have established him in underground hip-hop. In addition to being an accomplished producer, DJ, and MC, his love of hip-hop culture fuels his visual art projects. Stigg Of The Dump is an Irish transplant with a knack for beat digging and a belly full of Guinness. His release, Still Alive At The Veglia Lounge loudly announced his arrival and is fast becoming a vital piece of instrumental hip-hop wax. Villain Accelerate remains an open sketchbook for two artists in need of a safe place for their darkest and most unconventional ideas (Mush Records) .

Artist of the Day: Thavius Beck
Hip-hop producer Thavius Beck launched his career by forming the Los Angeles-based hip-hop group Global Phlowtations—then produced, recorded and mixed the band’s three independent projects. He soon signed with independent Hollywood label Mush Records and released the Decomposition album, which featured a collaboration with the lead singer of The Mars Volta (Cedric Bixler-Zavala) on “Amongst The Shadows.” Shortly after the record’s release, Beck worked on Saul Williams’ second album and joined him on a worldwide tour. After the tour, Beck returned to Los Angeles and completed THRU, his second Mush Records release featuring collaborations with Mia Doi Todd, 2MEX and Saul Williams. Soon after, Beck and Williams co-created a remix for the Nine Inch Nails single “Survivalism,” which Interscope released in international markets via CD single.
Beck also collaborates with his good friend and fellow artist Giovanni Marks (aka Subtitle) on a side project under LabWaste, which is focused on dance music with a hip-hop twist. With LabWaste, the duo has toured extensively in Europe. Thavius has most recently worked on "The Rise and Liberation of NiggyTardust" (collaborating with Saul Williams and Trent Reznor) and the new K-the-I??? album, "Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow" (which he produced) (Discogs, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Omid (Beneath The Surface)
Born in Chicago, living in Iran from age 1 to 7, then moving to Los Angeles right after the Iranian revolution, Omid has seen a lot, and is influenced by it all. Growing up in Los Angeles, Omid got first turned on to Hip Hop by listening to KDAY, L.A.’s first all Hip Hop radio show. Learning early on that rapping or breakdancing was not for him, he did realize he had a fascination with the beats. In junior high, Omid started his first musical experiments, trying to create his own beats by using his only piece of equipment: a tape recorder. Using the record and pause buttons, plus his many tapes of jazz and soul that he taped off of local radio station KXLU, the first Omid beats were born. It wasn’t until freshman year in highschool that he borrowed a simple sampler, the Korg DSS-1, that he was able to make real beats. Though what started as a hobby was soon taken more serious.
Attending an open mic in Los Angeles called the “Goodlife” in the early 1990’s was a pivotal moment in Omid’s life. A safe haven for positive, artistic, and innovative poets and musicians, Omid was inspired to take his bedroom beat experiments more seriously, in order to be part of this thriving music scene. At the “Goodlife,” the artists were encouraged to be cutting edge and innovative, if they didn’t want to get the legendary “Please pass the mic!” reception. Already a scene with great producers, Omid knew right away would make him stand out: his roots. This inspired him to research and collect music from Iran and the Middle East, along with the usual jazz, funk, rock, etc. that is the root of hip hop. One day Omid showed a Goodlife producer named Ebow his music. Ebow liked what he heard and together they released a home-made beat tape that they sold only at the Goodlife, entitled “Beat Stampede.” Soon, Omid’s beats caught the ears of the local talent and the collaborations began.
In 1998, Omid produced “Beneath the Surface,” a 14 song compilation that brought many unknown talents from all over Los Angeles together for one album. This album was also the first official release of many who went on to be L.A. favorites. Omid produced all the songs, tailoring each beat for each dynamic MC, forging collaborations with artists that had never worked together before. Omid originally released the album by himself, and it was re-released in 1999 by Celestial Recordings. Although this album was done strictly for the love, it won Omid critical acclaim in such publications as The New York Times, Spin, and URB. “Beneath the Surface” gave Omid the courage to pursue music as a career full-time. This album was also one of the first, if not the first, to include Persian/Iranian samples in a “hip hop” record.
Since “Beneath the Surface”, Omid has produced 2 solo albums, “Distant Drummer” and “Monolith” (Mush Records), plus collaborated with countless cutting edge artists, such as the Beastie Boys, Aceyalone, Buck 65, Sach, 2mex/OMD, Scarub, Murs, Pigeon John, Slug, and many others. Movie soundtracks have also been a big influence on Omid, so it is not a surprise that his music has blended well with film (Last.fm, 2010).

Artist of the Day: The Opus
The Opus is comprised of Mr. Echoes a.k.a. Fanum, and The Isle of Weight, two producers that combine their haunting styles with penetrating sounds. This production team constructs its elaborate sounds with depth and passion in such a way that listeners' deepest emotions are stirred.
After working individually for some time, the two producers decided to combine their styles of production. Shortly after, Mr. Echoes and The Isle of Weight ventured into projects with several lyricists to compliment their instrumentals. In a search to find lyricists to match the eerie yet mesmerizing sounds of The Opus, Mr. Echoes and The Isle of Weight discovered the talents of Meta Mo and Lumba, together known as the group, Rubberoom. The Opus' heart- wrenching beats combined with Rubberoom's crafty lyrics which evolved into a wild success.
The collaborations include four twelve-inch singles, a CD five, an EP, and an album. The EP, Gothic Architecture, was the beginning of a saga that continued with the group's subsequent album, Architechnology. Segments of Architechnology were displayed on MTV's Road Rules and also used in the X Games. Architechnology received national recognition, and ultimately became the product of a global record deal.
The Opus has since collaborated with a number of other artists such as DJ Krush, Meat Beat Manifesto, Slug from Atmosphere, Aesop Rock, Murs , Pigeon John, I Self Devine and Earatik Statik. To date, the OPUS has released two EP's (Early Detection & Earthwalker), two full length CD's (First Contact & Breathing Lessons), and a special 12" series called the Movement Series, which was released exclusively in Japan. Currently, the OPUS is working on its 3rd studio LP titled "Box Cutters". The Opus' ultimate goal is to convey ingenuity and innovation throughout its work, while also retaining the originality that listeners have raved about since their first exposure to the production team's intricate style (The Opus, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Caural
Chicago-bred instrumentalist and producer Zachary Mastoon grew up playing jazz (he was one of the founders of the group Transmission along with Stuart Bogie and Eric Perney until they left for college) and funk (his band ended up backing rapper Diverse), though he didn't discover the kind of downbeat experimental electronica and hip-hop that interested him most until enrolling at NYU in 1997 (after stints at various colleges studying different things). There he began delving into Prefuse 73 and Daedelus-styled production under the name Caural (pronounced like "coral"). In 2000 his debut album, Initial Experiments in 3-D, came out on Toshoklabs, followed by a move to Chocolate Industries and the release of the Paint EP and Stars on My Ceiling full-length in 2001 and 2002, respectively. Eventually, Caural was signed to Mush, and Remembering Today was issued in 2005. The next year, Mirrors for Eyes, which featured vocals on some tracks, came out (Brown, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Blue Sky Black Death
Blue Sky Black Death is the dynamic production team of Kingston and Young God. Sharing a penchant for tasteful instrumental hip-hop and traditional underground MCs, the two work as complimentary halves of the same mind. Since 2004, Kingston has built a solid reputation with his work on albums by Boston legend Virtuoso, Babygrande's flamethrower Jus Allah, and Philadelphia truth-teller Chief Kamachi. He has found an ideal partner in Young God. The Bay Area studio maverick's attention to detail, vast beat library, and audiophile ear have helped Kingston step his productions to the next level, as their ever-expanding releases on Mush and Babygrande can witness. Their combined productions stay true to classic hip-hop foundations while incorporating left-field elements that are all their own. Artist of the Day: Fat Jon The Ample Soul Physician
Unorthodox producer/rapper Fat Jon is not only the beat-maker for the underground hip-hop collective Five Deez but a member of the 3582 crew and a solo artist with a string of albums that flirt with electronica, downtempo, and dub sounds. Sometimes credited as Fat Jon the Ample Soul Physician, Jon started out as a rapper in his native Cincinnati. There weren't many beat-makers on the local scene, so Jon learned how to make his own, working with a set of analog equipment that fit perfectly with his old school-loving, throwback style. As time went on, he became more forward-looking, but the analog equipment stuck around, creating a unique style that was both familiar and strange. Around 2000 his two crews began making waves in the underground rap community, and soon artists like Rakim, Talib Kweli, and Black Star were hiring Fat Jon for his dynamic production style.
A year later he struck out on his own with Humanoid Erotica, a laid-back, lounge-ish full-length credited to "Fat Jon as Maurice Galactica." The moody, mellow collection Wave Motion appeared in 2003, and a year later he began working with Stefan Betke, better known as Pole. Now based in Berlin, Fat Jon added his rhymes to Pole's 2003 self-titled release, a hip-hop-flavored album from a project that had been strictly icy cold and dub previously. Even if Pole's loyal fan base saw the jump in genres as heresy, the album introduced Fat Jon to a whole new audience. Now armed with computers and plenty of digital gear to go with his analog, Jon put his production hat back on for 2004's Lightweight Heavy, a breakthrough release that benefited from the attention he received with Pole. The year 2006 was extremely busy, with a new Five Deez album (Kommunicator), an instrumental album (Afterthought), and a collaboration with the indie electronic outfit Styrofoam (The Same Channel) all being released (Jeffries, 2010).

Artist of the Day: Odd Nosdam
Meet David P. Madson, a.k.a. Odd Nosdam: artist, musician, DJ, and co-founder and ex-art director of Bay Area record label/collective Anticon.
Through the years, this Middle American maestro of beat-driven collage has championed a sound reflective of his greatest influences (hip-hop, indie rock, reggae, ambient), but one that can only be paired with the Odd Nosdam name. His source materials are meticulously selected from dusty vinyl archives, field recordings and occasional live instrumentation, then spun into heady atmospheric bliss via sampling, knob turning, layering, tape-dubbing, and the happy accidents that come with the territory. His oeuvre comprises album-length opuses of shadowy soundscapes (2005 and 2007’s fuzz-addled, dub-damaged wonder twins, 'Burner' and 'Level Live Wires'), hodgepodge instrumental collections (1999’s 'Plan 9... Meat Your Hypnotis.', 2002’s 'No More Wig For Ohio', and 2006’s self-released 'Vol. 8'), crate-digging mix tape delights (like 2002's masterful DJ mash-up 'Le Mixtape Delux' and 2007's smash-up 'Mixtape Super Delux'), original soundtracks (most notably, for Element Skateboards' 2007 feature length film, 'This Is My Element'), and compilations of choice odds and ends (2008's double disc set of remixes, B-sides, videos and original songs, 'Pretty Swell Explode').
In collaboration as well, Nosdam has made deep forays into the far side of sound, first gaining wide acclaim for the megaspheric drone and warped pop of his former group cLOUDDEAD (with fellow Anticon founders Why? and Doseone); more recently, working closely with Mike Patton on his Peeping Tom project and remixing tracks by a variety of bands including The Notwist, Danielson Famile, Serena-Maneesh, Boards of Canada, Bracken and Black Moth Super Rainbow. He’s also produced, mixed or collaborated with Jel, Jessica Bailiff, Reaching Quiet, Restiform Bodies, Thee More Shallows, TV On The Radio, Kool Keith, Themselves, Sole, Sage Francis, Mr. Dibbs, Dosh, Fog, Why?, Alias, Múm, Eluvium, Grouper, Greenthink, Hood and others (Anticon).

Artist of the Day: Eliot Lipp
From Tacoma to San Francisco to Chicago to Los Angeles to New York, producer Eliot Lipp has always followed the music. Creating songs that, according to XLR8R, "tickle days after the last spin," he combines hip-hop influenced drum programming with the vintage synthesizer sounds found in the cutting edge electronic music of the 70s. Eliot Lipp's early career saw him vigorously honing his skill on the club circuit where his fresh and daring take on hip-hop impressed Scott Herren (Prefuse 73) so much that he put out his 2004 debut LP on Eastern Developments. Subsequent successful releases on Hefty Records have continued to expand his audience and refine his craft. Now, Mush is thrilled to bring offerings of Eliot Lipp's timeless yet novel interpretation of electro-funk to the people (JamBase, 1998-2010).

Artist of the Day: Blockhead
Underground beat maestro Anthony Simon, better known as Blockhead, first lent his production hands in the mid-'90s to then up-and-coming MC Aesop Rock, who rose to indie rap prominence during the 2000s. Blockhead's contributions to Aesop's LPs were a big factor to the indie MC's success, especially those from Aesop's highly regarded Definitive Jux debut Labor Days (2001). Nevertheless, in the following years the New York producer garnered his own acclaim as an instrumental rap artiste, turning his sampledelic beats into brooding, trip-hop-like concoctions.
Born and raised in Manhattan, Simon was one of seven children. The bohemian mentality of his father, a painter and sculptor, and the steadfastness of his mother, a social worker, confounded Simon's upbringing, but yet informed his musical pursuits. He was aspiring to be an MC -- that is, until he first met Aesop Rock in 1994, the one year he attended Boston University. After hearing Aesop spit verses, he hung up the mic and focused on producing. Blockhead provided most of the beats for Aesop afterwards, including Aesop's self-pressed material, Music for Earthworms (1997) and Appleseed (1999), as well as his proper full-length debut Float, released via Mush Records in 2000. In 2001, Mush wound up releasing Blockhead's first beat tape, Blockhead's Broken Beats, as well.
Blockhead continued producing Aesop when the abstract MC signed with New York upstart Def Jux in 2000. Upon the 2001 release of Labor Days, for which Blockhead produced nine tracks, critics and indie rap fans alike heavily praised the two's work. It led to the release of the EP Daylight the following year, which was based around the popular "Daylight" song from the Labor Days LP.
With this success, Blockhead began to break out on his own. Though not intended to become a real project, the Manhattan producer formed comedy rap duo Party Fun Action Committee with longtime friend Jeremy Gibson, aka Jer, issuing their debut, Let's Get Serious, on Def Jux in 2003; he also supplied beats for many of the label's signees, including Murs, Hangar 18, and later Cage. However, for his solo material, he shopped around to other labels, eventually finding a home in U.K. electronic stalwart Ninja Tune. Blockhead's proper debut, the Insomniac Olympics EP, arrived in 2003, and led up to the more cinematic and downtempo full-length, Music by Cavelight in 2004, and the ode to his Manhattan home, Downtown Science, in 2005. His work with Aesop diminished considerably during this period, until the recording of Aesop's 2007 album, None Shall Pass. That same year, Ninja Tune issued Blockhead's third long-player, Uncle Tony's Coloring Book, a more uptempo piece than his previous records (Cordor, 2010).
